Rapper Curtis Jackson, known to the wide masses under the alias 50 Cent, was on Wednesday charged with domestic violence stemming from a June incident with an ex-girlfriend.
The 37-year-old rapper was accused of allegedly kicking his ex, who he has a child with, and causing $7,100 in property damage at her condominium in Toluca Lake, California. 50 Cent allegedly began destroying the woman's chandeliers, furniture, television and a lamp, as well as ransacking a bedroom closet.
The woman locked herself in a closet and the rapper allegedly kicked down the door and kicked the woman, too. Jackson was charged with five counts, including one count of domestic violence and four counts of vandalism.
Officials said the rapper left the scene before Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived.
50 Cent and the woman had been in a three-year relationship and he has a child with her.
The rapper faces a maximum sentence of five years in jail and $46,000 in fines, if convicted on all counts. Jackson was due back in court on July 22 for his arraignment.
50 Cent tweeted on Wednesday that he was not in custody. 'I'm in the car I haven't been arrested. I'm listing (sic) to MJ#SMSAUDIO,' he tweeted to his nearly 7.4 million followers while giving a plug to his SMS Audio electronics manufacturing company. The reference was apparently to listening to Michael Jackson, as he earlier tweeted lyrics from the the King of Pop's 1982 hit Billie Jean.
The New York rapper has starred in several films including the semi-autobiographical Get Rich or Die Tryin', which was also the name off his 2003 album.
Jackson started dealing drugs at age 12 during the 1980s crack epidemic that hit urban America hard and left drug dealing to pursue a rap career. He has become on of the world's highest-selling rappers and founded his own record label G-Unit Records in 2003. 50 Cent formerly dated talk show host Chelsea Handler and singer Ciara.
