- Veteran rapper Modenine is in the news again
- This is as a result of the rumor going around that Jay Z stole a song from him
- He has come out to deny the reports
On Friday, June 30, legendary American rapper Jay Z released his 14th studio album titled 4:44 to critical acclaim. Many all over the world took to their social media pages to express their delight at the album.
Not to be left out, Nigerians also started discussing the album and many were touched by the message in one of the tracks named The Story of OJ.
It was not until popular Nigerian rapper Modenine released a video with a song that sounded similar to Jay Z’s song playing in the background. That song titled My Skin is Black was released by Mode back in 2008, 9 years before Jay’s song.
Naturally, many thought Jay Z had stolen Modenine’s song. Some even went as far as contacting various websites telling them that Beyonce’s husband had stolen from a lesser known Nigerian rapper.
But that wasn’t the case. The truth is that both Modenine and Jay Z sampled a song by American jazz singer Nina Simone titled Four Women. The song was released in 1996 and Mode was the first to use it in a song of his.
In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece.
Taking to his Instagram page, Modenine explained what happened while at the same time telling those peddling rumors to stop.
