- Albert Johnson aka Prodigy one half of the popular rap duo Mobb Deep has died
- His death has caused an outpouring of emotions on social media
The world is in mourning after news broke that Prodigy, one half of the influential rap group Mobb Deep has died.
His publicist said in a statement: “It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis.
As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
Sickle cell anaemia is a condition which sees red blood cells die early, leaving a shortage in supply of healthy red blood cells. It can result in incredibly painful blockages where blood is unable to flow correctly.
Born Albert Johnson, the rapper was active on social media just two days ago and his fans and celebrity friends are now flooding his feed with messages.
Mobb Deep, the rap duo comprised of Prodigy and Havoc, has sold more than three million records. Their albums The Infamous and Hell on Earth, were critically acclaimed successes in the 1990s. The group took an indefinite hiatus in 2012 but reunited shortly after, releasing their eighth album, The Infamous Mobb Deep, in 2014.
May he rest in peace.
