- A UK couple were set to get married in 2018 but had to change their plans
- This is because the future groom was diagnosed with terminal cancer
- Their appeal to gather funds for their wedding was rapidly met
45-year-old Tracy Brooks and 63-year-old Ray Kershaw were a happy UK couple who had planned to get married in style in 2018. All their desires and happiness were cut short upon hearing the worst news about the groom.
All their plans were drastically altered in March after Kershaw was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. The doctors’ verdict was that it was already terminal and he would only live a few more weeks.
Kershaw was already bedridden by mid-May but his dream of marrying Brooks was not over yet. They made an appeal to collect the necessary funds to perform a simple yet heartfelt ceremony at the hospital.
Their petition was filled with the generosity of family, friends and strangers. With the funds they managed to gather, Brooks bought herself a wedding dress, and outfits for the bridesmaids and groom who looked dashing in a suit and blue tie.
Brooks and Kershaw finally tied the knot on Saturday at Springhill Hospice in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
They had originally planned to get married on June 2, but Kershaw’s state was rapidly deteriorating. It was then they decided to go on with their plans in barely 24 hours.
The kind generosity of strangers made it all possible. It was arranged through the charity Gift of a Wedding. They even arranged for a cake and wedding cars.

The ceremony was attended by relatives, friends and nursing staff. One of the bridesmaids, Melissa King, commented that “What Gift of a Wedding did was incredible. They were up all hours the night before the wedding to make sure it happened. I know Tracy and Ray can't thank everyone enough for making it happen. We can't believe how much people donated at such short notice.”
Gift of a Wedding also posted a moving message on their Facebook account: “We truly cannot thank each and every one of you enough who shared and commented on our post and most of all to the amazing suppliers who have come together at such short notice - you're all brilliant.”
