Olaniyi Afonja married his lovely wife Olaiya in 2004. Speaking in a recent interview, he revealed the state of his finances when he met his wife. Olaniyi admitted to having nothing but his tribal marks but his wife still stuck with him, making him believe the marriage was ordained by God.
Olaniyi aka Sanyeri is a successful film actor and producer who began his acting career in 1996 after being introduced to the theatre world by a close friend. In a recent interview with Tofarati Ige, Olaniyi and his wife talked extensively on their marriage.
The couple opened up about their union which has been blessed with two adorable children. NAIJ.com earlier reported Sanyeri saying he will never leave his wife or take a second wife.
When asked about how he met his wife and what attracted her to him, the actor said: "I met her in 2004 when I want to screen my movie, Okan Emi, at the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos. She came there to have a good time. I sighted her and her friend from afar. I walked up to her friend and told her I liked her friend but she said I should tell her myself. So I went to her and told her I would want us to get closer but she replied that was it because I just shot a movie that made me think I could ask her out. Afterwards, she walked away. After that day, I saw her about a month later and I requested for her number. Even then, it took me a while to convince her to date me.
People always have an idea of the kind of person they would like to marry. Since my childhood, I had made up my mind that I would marry someone who is taller than me, so that our children would be of good height. So her stature was the first thing that attracted me to her. In the course of dating, I discovered that she is a nice person and we understood each other well. That convinced me that she was a good wife material."
When asked how he proposed and how she accepted, they both said: "I didn’t even propose with a ring because there was no money then. I just told her I wanted to marry her and I knew she would make her choice whether to marry me or not. The good thing is that she understood me and accepted to be my wife. I used to work more behind the scenes then taking care of set lighting and other technical aspects of production."
His wife responded saying: "I believe that our marriage was ordained by God. I knew he wasn’t so buoyant at that time but I felt he was someone who had a bright future and he cared about me. So I decided to give him a try and I am happy for where we are today."
Talking about the storm before the rainbow in his marriage, he said: "I always remember those times that we didn’t have much and she stuck by me. When my wife gave birth to our first child, I had just N3, 500 with me, so it was quite tough. That’s why I always say that there is nothing I cannot give my wife. As of the time she married me, the only property I had was my tribal mark."
